Lectures and Lecturers
The Scituate Historical Society offers several different
lectures on various topics. The Society’s lecturers will speak for
any group, and our rates are flexible.
Warnings Ignored! by David
Ball, Fred Freitas. David and Fred teach at the Gates
Intermediate School in Scituate and have co-authored two books, including
Warnings Ignored: The Story of the Portland Gale of 1898. Together, or
separately, they can weave the tale of the storm and bring a
crowd back
to the terrible nights of November 26, 1898.
Restoring Scituate’s Grand Army Hall
by David Corbin. The GAR Hall Preservation Project Director
for the Society, David Corbin’s lifelong research into Scituate’s
past and his hands-on work on the restoration of Scituate’s oldest
public building combine to present the amazing history of the Grand Army
Hall, its people, uses and ongoing restoration.
Images of America: Scituate by
Carol Miles, Fred Freitas, David Ball. Any combination
of the co-authors of Arcadia Publishing’s runaway best-selling book
for 2000, the top-selling title of 351 produced that year by that company,
can tell the story of the book, a survey of the town’s past as
told through more than 180 photographs.
King Philip’s War in Scituate
by Fred Freitas. A seventh grade social studies teacher, Fred has focused
on stories of local interest for most of his career. Scituate played an
important role in America’s most forgotten conflict, and Fred takes
us on a tour of the sites in town that still stand from the time of the
war and reminds us of the fantastic tales connected with the various Native
American raids in Scituate.
TW Lawson - Fate of the Worlds only Seven Masted Schooner. Lectures by Thomas Hall.
