The primary focus of the Scituate Historical
Society is to educate the public about the history of the town and the
broader themes of American and international history as they affected
the local community. The Society accomplishes these goals through two
separate lecture series, the publication and sale of new titles on local
themes, the operation of a historical and genealogical library, in-class
visits by our experts, and guided tours of our many sites. To inquire
about any education program, contact director@scituatehistoricalsociety.org.
Visiting Our Sites
The Society prides itself on its educational flexibility. With ten historic
sites, most of which pertain to widely different themes, the volunteers
and staff of the Society work with teachers, tour directors, camp leaders
and more to fit the Society’s educational assets to the needs of
the visiting groups.
For instance, several school groups today take advantage
of the proximity of Scituate Lighthouse and the Scituate Maritime &
Irish Mossing Museum for a full day of maritime history learning. Others
have chosen to visit both the Cudworth and Mann Houses in one session,
seeing both the “haves” and “have nots” of the
19th century.
The Society can accommodate groups ranging in size from
ten to thirty people at a time, but more can be accommodated with the
help of added teachers, chaperones, and parents. Our rates are very fair,
and every dollar goes to further our educational and historic preservation
missions.
As our sites are currently in varying states of renovation
and repair, all ideas should be discussed with the education staff.
Bringing the Society to You
The Scituate Historical Society is also proud to visit
classrooms before, after, or in lieu of a visit to our sites. We can bring
imagery and artifacts directly to the classroom to enhance any learning
experience. Contact us to find out what it is that we can do for you.
